A hinged box veneered in alternating bands of rosewood and a pale, figured wood, with the stripes running vertically across the front and sideways across the lid. The velvet-lined lid closes over an open, paper-lined well, sized for a dressing table or desk. I like how the stripes change direction between the front and the top. Both lining materials are in good condition.

This box is in good condition for its age, with wear that fits 150 years or more of use, mostly to the lid edge, the ends and the base. The veneer is sound. I found no splits, cracks, repairs or staining, and there is no odor. The hinges work well and the lid sits and closes properly. There is no key, and the lock does not operate without one. The interior is an open well with no tray or fitted compartments. The lid lining is velvet and the well is lined in paper, both in good condition, though I can't say either is original to the box. The underside is covered in brown baize that shows age wear.
