Drawn by John Gendall and published by Rudolph Ackermann in 1824, this hand-colored engraving depicts Stoke Place in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, recorded as the seat of Colonel Vyse. Ackermann's Repository of Arts was the preeminent topographical publishing house in Regency England, and this print carries the complete publication line intact, making it a fully documented example from one of the most collected series in British print history. The composition shows the house from across the parkland lake, with a pleasure boat carrying figures in the foreground and a classical garden temple visible at right among the trees.
The print is in good antique condition consistent with its age of approximately 200 years. The hand-coloring is well-preserved and clearly period-applied, with the warm ochre and rust tones in the foliage and blue-gray washes in the sky and water reading cleanly throughout. There is overall toning to the paper, more pronounced toward the center of the sheet, and light scattered foxing visible in the mat area and margins. The image zone is complete with no tears or losses. The title and full Ackermann publication line in the lower margin are legible. The frame and glazing are sound and presentable, with minor wear to the gilt bead consistent with age. Condition behind the mat was not assessed; buyers seeking a pristine example should inquire before purchase.
