Antique English engraving of Stoke Park, Buckinghamshire, the seat of John Penn, grandson of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. Published by R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, London, after a drawing by John Gendall (1790–1865), a Devon-based topographical artist and regular Ackermann contributor. The subject carries real historical weight: the neo-classical house was designed by James Wyatt, the landscaped grounds are in the Capability Brown tradition, and the village of Stoke Poges is the setting of Thomas Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. Framed in a period Hogarth-style frame with black ground and gilt inner edge.
