This is an English walnut keepsake box from the Edwardian period, made circa 1900 with a softly domed lid, figured walnut throughout, and brass hardware. The escutcheon is a simple shield form, and the lock works with the skeleton key that comes with the box. The interior lid retains its original printed paper lining in a green geometric pattern, now significantly worn. The base keeps its original green baize. Boxes of this form held the small personal things of a household: letters, jewelry, hair combs, sewing notions, mementos. It still does the same work today.

Condition

The box is in honest antique condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with use across more than a century. The figured walnut surface is intact across the lid, sides, and front, with the original finish in place and good color throughout. There are surface scratches on the lid, most visible on the top and along the front edge, and a few small impressions and marks that come with daily handling over the years. A hairline split runs through the walnut at one of the lower back corners, visible where the side panel meets the back panel, and there is another short split along the lid edge at the same corner area. Both are stable and structural. The brass shield escutcheon, brass hinges, and brass lock are all original and in place. The skeleton key included with the box turns the lock and operates the mechanism. The original printed paper lining inside the lid is significantly torn, with about half the lid showing exposed wood beneath. The pattern that survives is a green geometric and floral design typical of late Victorian and Edwardian box linings. The interior wood floor and walls of the compartment are clean. The original green baize on the base is largely intact with light wear.
