A late Victorian to Edwardian English silverplate gallery salver, sixteen and a quarter inches across, with a faceted scalloped edge and a pierced gallery rim in a classical oval-and-X pattern. The central reserve is finely bright-cut engraved with scrolling foliate cartouches, shell motifs, and trellis-work panels in the Rococo Revival manner, framing an empty center. The plate has worn through to the copper underbody across much of the well and the entire underside, giving the tray a warm two-tone copper-and-silver look that has its own following among bar and tabletop collectors. Unmarked, as much English silverplate of this period is. Standing on three cast scroll feet.
Honest antique condition with significant age-appropriate wear. The silverplate has worn through to the copper underbody across much of the central well and across nearly the entire underside, giving the piece its current two-tone copper-and-silver appearance. The engraved decoration in the center remains crisp and fully legible. The pierced gallery rim is intact with no losses, splits, or repairs to the piercing. The gadrooned borders top and bottom of the gallery are clean. There are scattered dents and minor surface marks consistent with long use. The three cast scroll feet are secure and the tray sits flat. The underside shows old tarnish and oxidation on the exposed copper and remaining silverplate. No polishing or restoration has been done recently. This is a piece for buyers who appreciate the warm two-tone look of plate-worn-to-copper as a feature rather than a flaw.
