A handsome English silver plate tray on copper, oval in form with a beaded rim and four shell-cast scroll feet. Trays like this are known as salvers in the antique trade, meaning a footed serving tray meant to be set down on a table rather than carried. The piece has the warm tone that only develops when silver plate wears down to expose the copper underneath, a quality collectors look for and pay extra for. The beaded edge catches the light at every point along the rim. I bought this one in England earlier this year, and while it carries no hallmarks, the construction and styling place it firmly in the early twentieth century.

Condition

The tray is in good honest antique condition with wear consistent with roughly a century of use. Silver plate loss is present throughout, most visible along the beaded rim, across the cast feet, and at the high points of the well where the warm copper shows through. The surface shows light scratching and a soft overall patina from years of polishing and use. The four feet are all present, sound, and original to the piece, retaining crisp casting detail. The underside shows similar honest wear. There are no hallmarks, maker's marks, or stamps visible on the piece. The form holds true with no dents, warping, or structural issues.

The piece carries no hallmarks and is sold as silver plate on copper of English origin, dating attributed based on construction, form, and styling.
