English Mahogany Library Steps in the Regency Taste

Refinished mahogany throughout, with strong color and visible flame figure on the riser panels. The piece has been French-polished at some point, giving it the high sheen visible in the photographs.

The flame-figured panels show condition points consistent with age and use. There is minor veneer chipping and small areas of wood loss at the lower edges of the front and side panels where they meet the leather treads, most visible at the lower corner of the front flame panel. Fine surface cracks and checking run through several of the flame mahogany panels, appearing as thin vertical and horizontal lines that have developed with natural wood movement over time. Scattered light scratches and surface marks are visible across the side panels, top edges, and lower sections. The reeded edge moldings show minor chipping and softening at the ends where they terminate at corner joints. The horizontal joint between case sections is visible with some unevenness consistent with original construction and movement over time.

The green leather treads are replacements, plain rather than tooled, in good condition with light scratches and surface marks from display use. The four turned baluster legs are intact with no breaks or repairs. The case construction is sound throughout, with pine secondary timber and dovetailed corners. Brass butt hinges on the top compartment function correctly. A small wooden keeper block has been added inside the compartment with one modern screw, a minor functional addition that does not affect structure. No active woodworm observed. No structural cracks or splits in the carcass.
