English House Design is a beautifully produced early 20th-century architectural study that captures the spirit and evolution of English domestic architecture at a pivotal moment in history. Written by Ernest Willmott, a respected architect and Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, this volume was published in London in 1911 by B. T. Batsford, one of the most important architectural publishers of the period.

The book offers a thoughtful review of English house design from the 16th century through the early 20th century, examining how proportion, layout, materials, and craftsmanship shaped the English home. Willmott combines historical analysis with commentary on contemporary design, making the book both a record of the past and a guide for architects and designers of his own time. It reflects the strong influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, emphasizing tradition, quality, and livability at a moment just before modernism and World War I transformed English architecture forever.

Condition

The original cloth binding is firm and intact. Light rubbing and mild edge wear are present throughout, with gentle fading to the spine, all consistent with a book of this age and well within what one expects from a working copy more than a century old. The gilt lettering on the spine and front board remains clear and attractive. Internally, the pages are clean overall. Moderate foxing and age toning are present, most noticeable on the endpapers and a few of the preliminary leaves, and lighter through the body of the text. The text block is solid with no loose or missing pages, and all plates are present and accounted for. The tissue-guarded frontispiece is intact.
