A carved oak pediment salvaged from a piece of English Renaissance Revival case furniture, circa 1880. The center is a stylized palmette set within an arched niche, flanked by pierced scrolling acanthus and twin canted shoulder blocks that originally aligned with column or pilaster fronts on the parent cabinet. The deep mortise channel along the back top edge confirms it was tenoned into a cornice rather than nailed, which is the construction you find on quality cabinetmaker's work of the period. Architectural fragments of this type were saved for the carving when the parent cabinet broke down, and they read beautifully on a wall today.
The pediment is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear consistent with use as part of a piece of furniture for nearly 150 years. The carving is intact across the front face, with the palmette, scrolling acanthus, and pierced fretwork all present and crisp. The original dark finish is well preserved on the front, with the kind of soft sheen and depth that only comes with long age. The top back edge shows the original mortise channel, hand-cut, which would have joined the pediment to the cornice of the parent cabinet. There is some minor splitting along the mortise channel from where the piece was separated from the cabinet, and one small section of wood is missing at the back top edge, neither of which is visible from the front when hung. A small screw eye is fitted to one side as a later hanging addition. The back is unfinished as originally intended, since it was never meant to be seen. Ready to hang as wall sculpture.
