A striking Victorian edition of The Poetical Works of Edward Young, published by Gall & Inglis in Edinburgh as part of their Landscape Series of Poets. The red decorative cloth binding, black and gilt stamping, bright gilt edges, and illustrated pages make this an especially appealing copy for collectors of Victorian poetry and decorative antique books.
Young is best known for Night Thoughts, his meditative poem on mortality, faith, and the afterlife. This copy also includes a period presentation inscription dated December 21, 1882, adding another nice nineteenth-century detail to an already very displayable book.
Both hinges are loose, and the first page has a tear along the bottom edge. The spine ends show fraying and wear, and the corners and edges have been rubbed and bumped with general handling. Age toning is present throughout the text block, with light foxing in places, all consistent with a Victorian volume of this age. The decorative cloth remains attractive and the gilt stamping is legible. All engraved plates are present. An honest copy with good character and real age, more suitable for display and reading than for a fine binding collection.
