This oil on canvas, signed lower right and sourced in Paris, dates to roughly 1880 to 1900. The composition leans into the academic tradition but the handling is looser and more atmospheric than strictly academic work of the period. The deep oxblood ground throws the tambourine forward with real presence, and the painted decoration on its frame, those stylized red and brown motifs, has been rendered with careful attention. The silk falls in pale gold folds against the darker field, and the brass catches just enough light to feel warm rather than polished.
The canvas is unlined and remains on what appears to be its original stretcher, with a Paris colorman's stencil visible on the reverse. The paint surface is stable with fine age-appropriate craquelure throughout, most visible in the dark oxblood ground. There is scattered minor paint loss and abrasion along the upper edge and upper corners where the canvas meets the stretcher, consistent with a work of this age that has lived unframed or loosely framed for some time. The surface carries a light layer of grime and an aged varnish that has warmed the palette, and a professional clean would likely recover additional brightness in the gold silk and brass passages. Small scattered scuffs and scratches in the background ground, none affecting the central still life composition. The sabre, tambourine, inkwell, and silk are all in strong visual condition. The work would benefit from framing and is a strong candidate for light conservation, but it displays honestly and well in its current state.
