A study of a bearded man in glasses and a khaki safari hat, painted directly and loosely, with visible loaded brushwork left unblended in the hat and beard. Attributed to Adeline Hoagland, an American painter who worked in oils from the early 1980s onward, on the strength of direct studio provenance rather than a signature. The canvas is unfinished at its margins, where raw or thinly primed linen remains visible, giving a clear look at how she built the head before resolving the rest of the composition.
Surface discoloration and spotting are present throughout, most noticeable across the pale background around the figure, as observed in hand. No craquelure, paint loss, tears, or patches are visible in current photographs, and no inpainting or retouch is apparent. The tacking margins remain stapled to the original stretcher with no second lining canvas visible. The stretcher bars show no separation or warping. No varnish sheen is visible in photographs. The composition is left unfinished at its edges, where raw or thinly primed canvas remains visible around the figure and background. The work is unframed. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
