Published in London in 1838 by A. Cobbett, The English Gardener is a practical guide to vegetable, fruit, and ornamental gardening by William Cobbett, the well-known English writer, farmer, and reformer. Written for everyday readers, it offers straightforward advice on planting, pruning, soil preparation, and seasonal garden work. This copy is especially appealing for its many illustrations, including a fold-out plate, and its later half leather binding with marbled boards, which gives it an attractive period look. A strong nineteenth-century gardening book with lasting appeal for collectors of horticulture and country life.
This copy has been rebound in half leather with marbled boards and presents well overall. The spine ends and corners show moderate rubbing, and the boards have some expected scuffing and general wear from handling, all consistent with age. Internally, there is likely the usual age toning and scattered foxing associated with a book of this period. The binding appears sound and the volume is structurally solid. The fold-out illustration is present and intact.
