The lyre and laurel blocked into both covers tells you what this book was for. It is a volume of poetry dressed to be given, and someone did exactly that. An ink inscription on a front leaf reads "To Miss Isabella Martin, Dundee," which fits the decorative full calf, the gilt floral corners, and the all edges gilt that catch light when the book is closed. The text is Campbell's Pleasures of Hope, the poem he wrote at twenty-one that made him famous overnight, here in the 1822 Longman New Edition with steel-engraved plates after Richard Westall. Small enough to hold in one hand, handsome enough to leave out.

The binding is full calf, decoratively tooled in gilt and blind on both covers with a central lyre and wreath device, and is structurally sound with the text block firm. Wear is honest and consistent with age. The covers show surface staining and discoloration to the central panels, most noticeable on the front, along with scattered scratches and light marks. The corners are bumped and rubbed with some exposure, and there is wear along the joints and at the spine ends. The spine retains its red morocco label and gilt compartments, with rubbing to the high points and the date 1822 gilt at the foot. Internally the book is clean and bright with only minor age toning and occasional light spotting. The steel-engraved illustrated titles and plates after Westall are crisp. The engraved plates carry an 1820 imprint date, normal for a volume of this kind where earlier steel plates were bound into a later letterpress edition. All leaves and plates present. A genuine period gift inscription appears in ink on a front leaf. A handsome, complete gift binding showing its age.
