Brown’s Dictionary of the Holy Bible is a substantial 1846 biblical reference work published in London by Thomas Tegg and compiled from the scholarship of Rev. John Brown of Haddington. Designed to explain the people, places, customs, and language of Scripture, it served as a practical companion for ministers, students, and households engaged in serious Bible study during the 19th century.

Brown was widely respected for making theology more approachable, and this dictionary reflects that purpose. It brings together historical, geographical, and theological entries in a single volume intended to help readers better understand both the Old and New Testaments.

This copy is especially attractive in a half calf binding with marbled paper boards. The polished calf spine features blind tooling, gilt bands, and a burgundy morocco title label, while the green marbled boards give the book a strong decorative presence on the shelf. An engraved frontispiece adds further visual appeal.

This copy is in very good antique condition. The leather shows light rubbing at the joints, spine ends, and corners, with minor scuffing from shelf wear. The gilt bands and title label remain strong and clean. The green marbled paper boards are vibrant, with a few light marks and scattered wear consistent with age. The binding is sturdy and square. Internally, the book opens cleanly to a beautifully preserved engraved frontispiece, with only mild foxing and some toning to the margins of the title page and preliminary leaves. No major tears, writing, or water damage. A solid and attractive copy of a well-regarded Victorian reference work.
