Vintage Japanese Terracotta with Tenmoku (Black) Glazed Planter
Mid-20th c. Japan (likely Mino or Mashiko region)
8.75" H x 6.75" W x 6.75" D
This mid-20th-century Japanese bonsai pot is a striking example of folk-craft tradition, made from terracotta and finished with a lustrous black tenmoku glaze. The pot features an organic undulating rim, flared sides, and rests on four small feet with a central drainage hole. Tenmoku glaze, celebrated since the Song dynasty and adopted into the Japanese tea ceremony, was revived during the 20th-century mingei movement, emphasizing handmade artistry and the beauty of imperfection. Its dark reflective surface creates a dramatic backdrop for bonsai, seasonal plants, or as a sculptural display piece. The subtle variations in glaze and hand-built character embody the wabi-sabi philosophy, making it not just a planter but a piece of living art.

Condition: The pot is in overall very good vintage condition, structurally sound with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The glossy black glaze displays natural firing variations along with visible water spots and light mineral deposits from past use, most noticeable under strong lighting. These surface marks are typical for glazed terracotta planters and add to the authentic, time-worn character of the piece. The unglazed terracotta base and drainage hole show expected wear from age and use, with no issues affecting function or stability. (Please refer to photos)
