A Jesuit professor of rhetoric in Palermo published this guide to Italian vernacular poetry in 1755, and the second edition — enlarged and improved, as the title page announces — came out of Lucca, one of the more intellectually open printing centers in 18th-century Italy. Bisso was working squarely within the Society of Jesus's humanist tradition, where rhetoric and poetics sat at the heart of the curriculum, and his subject here is the Italian vulgar tongue as a serious literary vehicle. Dante and Petrarch are his touchstones. The binding is period-authentic half-vellum over hand-marbled boards, the fore-edges marbled in coral and cream, and the spine lettered by hand directly on the vellum in a warm rust ink.

The half-vellum spine shows wear at the head and tail, with some surface cracking at the extremities consistent with age and use. The binding remains structurally sound. The marbled boards retain their color well, with general surface soiling and handling wear across both covers. Foxing is present throughout the interior pages and is visible on the exterior as well, ranging from light scattered spots to heavier concentrations in places, as expected in an Italian paper book of this period and in this climate. The text is fully legible throughout. No inscriptions, bookplates, or ownership marks. All pages present and complete.
