Beauties of Poetry and Gems of Art, published by Cassell, Petter, and Galpin in the late 19th century, is a beautifully curated collection of poems, songs, and ballads illustrated with works by English artists. The book combines the literary and visual arts, creating a harmonious celebration of both mediums. By pairing evocative poetry with detailed illustrations, the book captures the Victorian ideal of integrating beauty and meaning in artistic expression. It was intended to provide readers with both intellectual enrichment and aesthetic pleasure, reflecting the era’s appreciation for cultural sophistication and the moral value of literature and art.
A good copy showing the fading and age to the cloth that one expects from a Victorian binding of this period. The gold-stamped decoration and floral motifs remain visible and the green decorative block on the cover is intact.
