Issued in Milan in 1860 at the height of the Second Italian War of Independence, this copy of Gli Austriaci e l'Italia by Carlo de La Varenne carries a binding that matches the politics of the moment. Stated first Italian edition, translated from the third French edition with the author's approval. The deep blue leather is densely gilt on both boards and spine with scrollwork, a central oval medallion, and geometric corner tooling. The spine title "Dono ai Veri Italiani" reads as a direct address to the cause. All edges fully gilt, decorative gilt borders within, pale blue endpapers. A strong copy for collectors of Risorgimento material or fine decorative bindings of the period.
Binding is secure with no looseness and no missing pages. All edges fully gilt and intact. Light wear at the corners and edges consistent with age. Interior pages show light toning with occasional minor spotting. No odor. A previous owner signature is present on a preliminary page, not fully legible. Overall a clean, solid, and very attractive copy.
