Antique Walnut Umbrella Stand
Antique Walnut Umbrella Stand

An umbrella and cane stand stamped on the underside by a Berlin firm, built with swelling curved sides and cast gilt brass mounts at the feet. That is more decoration than a piece meant to hold wet umbrellas by the door usually got. The metal liner lifts straight out, and it still holds water.
Later or refreshed polish, not the original finish. Loss to the moulded top rim at the front left corner, with abrasion along the rim edge. A fine vertical split runs down from the top of the upper back panel. Small pale specks of paint or plaster spatter across the front and side panels and heavily on the liner; may reduce with cleaning, untreated as shown. Back and underside are unveneered and carry grey and white scuffing. Wear to the bottoms of all four feet, heaviest at the rear.
All four cast gilt brass sabots present, gilding rubbed on the raised areas, fixings concealed so originality is unconfirmed. A small filled hole sits beside one mount. Brass rim band tarnished with slight lifting at one corner.
The removable liner is fitted to this case but very likely a later replacement. Its green interior paint is extensively flaked to bare metal and the rim is lightly dented. It seats fully and holds water.
No flight holes visible on the unveneered back or bottom board, not treated and not tested. Primary wood assessed as walnut, not proven, no end grain exposed. Date is a construction-based estimate with no dated mark.
