A South German or Austrian walnut chest of drawers from the mid-19th century, built during the late Biedermeier period and covered in some of the most ambitious parquetry work you will find on a piece this size. The top frieze drawer and upper case are worked in three-tone tumbling-block cube parquetry, each cube finished with a fine incised cross, framed by checkerboard and chevron banding that wraps every corner.
Behind the columnar stiles on each side, a lockable door opens to reveal fitted pigeonhole compartments, and a pull-out slide sits below the top drawer. Four graduated drawers in richly bookmatched figured walnut fill the serpentine front, each with its original pierced brass escutcheon. All six locks are present and working, with keys.
This was a skilled workshop piece, made to be admired from every angle, with full parquetry carried across the sides as well as the front.
Sold as-is, in very good antique condition for its age, with honest wear consistent with roughly 170 years of use. Please review all photos, which govern the description.
The original French-polished surface has been cleaned and waxed and retains rich color and figure. There is old, long-inactive insect (worm) damage to one front bun foot, with visible exit holes; the foot is structurally stable. Localized old inactive worm is also present in the softwood back panel. There is a shrinkage crack in the walnut veneer at the upper right corner of the case, and minor veneer lifting and small losses along the columnar stile edges and top-edge banding, all consistent with age and seasonal movement. Small veneer chips are present in the parquetry banding at the sharpest point of the serpentine front. The piece has not been tested or treated for active infestation beyond visual inspection; the worm damage observed appears historic and inactive.
All four drawers and the pull-out slide operate. Both side cabinet doors open, close, and lock. All six locks function and a complete set of keys is present. Brass escutcheons are original with appropriate aged patina. Species is assessed as walnut with fruitwood parquetry from surface examination; the softwood carcass is consistent with pine. Date is a construction-based estimate; there is no maker's mark. Dimensions are approximate.
