Antique Victorian Silverplate on Copper Pierced Jardinière
Antique Victorian Silverplate on Copper Pierced Jardinière

This is a well-made English electroplate jardinière of the kind produced in quantity by Sheffield and Birmingham workshops during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. The entire body wall is press-pierced in a repeating quatrefoil-and-star trellis, gadroon borders frame the serpentine rim and base rail, and four cast rococo scroll bracket feet — each with acanthus leaf and foliate piercings — give it considerably more presence than the typical plain-footed examples. An applied Rococo cartouche on each long face was intended to hold a crest or name label, the sort of small detail that distinguishes a piece made for a proper household from one made strictly for the trade. The liner is missing, as it almost always is on these. The copper substrate showing through the worn plate gives it the warm two-tone patina that makes this type of piece so appealing now.
The piece is in good antique condition with honest wear consistent with its age. Silverplate loss is present throughout and significant in areas: the base shows heavy loss exposing the copper, the oval reserves within both cartouche frames have lost all plate and read as warm copper, and the interior shows patchy plate loss across the floor and lower walls. The outer body walls retain more of the original plate, giving the piece an attractive two-tone copper and silver appearance overall that reads as genuine aged patina rather than damage. The cast feet are intact and retain good detail. The serpentine rim is crisp with no apparent bends or repairs. The cartouche frames are intact on both faces. No dents, splits, or structural issues noted. The liner is missing.
