Anne E. Keeling's Great Britain and Her Queen was published in its second, revised edition in 1897, the year of Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and it reads like exactly that: a book timed to a national celebration and written with genuine feeling for the reign it describes. Keeling traces Victoria's sixty years on the throne from the girl-queen who came to the throne at eighteen through the Crimean War, Indian Mutiny, and the extraordinary expansion of British trade, missionary work, and empire that defined the Victorian age. The illustrations throughout are wood engravings and halftone portraits, including a fine frontispiece portrait of Victoria from a Russell & Sons photograph, and the chapters on Wesleyan missions make clear this was published specifically for a Methodist readership by the Wesleyan Methodist publishing house, Charles H. Kelly. The presentation inscription inside places this copy in the hands of a recipient of the Wesleyan Foreign Missionary Society in March 1902, which is precisely the community this book was made for.

Condition

The publisher's cloth binding shows age-appropriate wear, with rubbing and fraying at the spine ends and corner edges. The rear board carries some surface soiling. The spine retains its decorative black-stamped design and gilded titling, though the gilt shows wear. The text block has heavy foxing throughout the pages, which is consistent with the paper quality typical of popular Victorian illustrated publications from this period. The frontispiece and internal engravings remain clear and legible despite the general foxing. The paste-down carries a presentation inscription from the Wesleyan Foreign Missionary Society dated March 1902; the recipient's surname is partially legible. A later bookplate sticker reading "Kelly McDonald" has been applied over the publisher's advertisement page. The binding is structurally sound.
