A late Victorian English leather despatch box in black morocco over wood, made circa 1880 to 1900. The despatch box was the working travel case of the Victorian gentleman, government official, lawyer, or military officer. It carried correspondence, contracts, deeds, and important papers between a country estate and a London office, between chambers and court, between a regimental headquarters and a field posting. The most famous version is the red Ministerial Despatch Box still used by British Cabinet ministers today, but private versions like this one were made by the London leather firms for anyone whose work required carrying papers securely. The flush recessed brass campaign handle with twisted rope bail, the crossed leather straps in the lid for holding papers flat, the fully leather lined interior, and the fitted tray over a deep main well are the defining features of the format.

The leather lined interior is intact throughout with light dust, surface wear, and minor scuffing consistent with use. The crossed leather straps in the lid are present and functional with some softening from age. The removable leather covered tray is in good order with its insert compartment intact.
