A richly detailed late Victorian book rack with arched ends dressed in pierced gilt brass and studded bosses that echo medieval door ironwork. The ends hinge up to act as sturdy bookends and fold flat when not in use, making this a practical and portable “book trough” for current reading. The base is walnut or mahogany with an ebonized perimeter, a favorite finish of the period that sets off the warm old gold tone of the mounts.
Likely English work from the Birmingham and London trade, c.1880 to 1900, the quality aligns with the luxury stationer wares retailed by houses such as Asprey, Leuchars, and Betjemann. The circular oculus and laurel wrapped oval medallion bring a Gothic and Renaissance Revival mix that reads perfectly in English country house, dark academia, and library chic interiors. Personally sourced and imported from the UK
