The handle is what makes this cane. It is a setter's head cast in solid 800 silver, with the dog's coat worked strand by strand down the neck and a well defined muzzle. Three struck marks on the back of the neck confirm the silver standard. The head sits on an ebonized hardwood shaft with a plain silver collar and a brass tip. A gentleman would have carried this, not leaned on it, which is why the form stayed slim.
This cane is in good antique condition with honest wear throughout. The 800 silver head is structurally sound and holds crisp detail across the coat and face. The silver is heavily tarnished, with a darker tone and whitish polish residue caught in the deep recesses of the fur, and the muzzle shows softening and wear to the high points from handling. These are surface conditions on solid silver, not plate loss. The hallmarks on the back of the neck are present but worn and are not fully legible, so the exact maker and country of assay cannot be confirmed. The ebonized shaft has scattered surface scratches, minor finish loss, and light handling marks along its length, consistent with age and use. The silver collar is tarnished and secure. The brass ferrule at the tip is intact with wear to the end. The head is firmly mounted to the shaft. The silver would respond to gentle polishing if a buyer prefers a brighter surface, though many collectors leave the patina in place.
