Warne bound their one-volume Shakespeare in a dusty mauve cloth printed with autumn leaves and berries in red, green, and gold, with SHAKSPEARE set in a gilt panel and a little banner promising the Life and Glossary inside. That spelling was common through the 19th century and it starts a conversation every time. Inside are the complete plays and poems in tight double columns, a memoir, and the glossary, 748 pages in all. Warne would go on to publish Beatrix Potter, but in these years they were putting handsome, affordable classics on Victorian shelves. It has clearly been read, and I think that suits it.
The boards are rubbed, with softened and bumped corners, and the printed foliage and gilt title panel remain clear and readable. The spine is sunned, with fraying and small losses at the head and tail. Foxing is heavy throughout. Foxing is the brown spotting that develops in 19th-century paper over time, and here it's heaviest at the endpapers and preliminary leaves, including a broad brown stain to one early leaf. The text is evenly toned. The binding shows wear but holds, and the text block is not loose. There are no inscriptions, bookplates, or owner markings. A well-read Victorian copy with strong shelf presence.
