Antique Rose Flower Oil Painting, Circa 1890
Antique Rose Flower Oil Painting, Circa 1890

A cut spray of pink and rose-red roses worked against an unlit olive ground, the petals built up in confident impasto while the leaves drop back into shadow. This is the small academic floral that European painters turned out in quantity between the 1890s and the First World War, and the appeal is all in the mood: the flowers glow out of the dark, the handling is trained and sure, and the whole thing is scaled to sit on a shelf or in a tight gallery wall rather than command a room. It carries a signature in the lower right, worn into the dark ground and no longer legible.
The paint film is stable and the image reads well, with the rose heads in good impasto and the dark ground intact. There is a signature in the lower right that has abraded into the ground and can no longer be read. Surface shows light wear and scattered flecking consistent with age, visible under raking light in the photographs. I have not cleaned the surface and am not making a claim either way about earlier cleaning or varnish. The support is a canvas-textured artist's board; the reverse is seated in the frame and not fully accessible without removal. The frame is a molded gilt profile with genuine wear, rubbing to the gilt, and losses at the corners showing red bole beneath, all shown in the photographs. Modern strap hangers and braided wire have been added for hanging and are recent. Please inspect the photographs closely as part of the condition description and ask about anything before purchase.
