Antique Regency Parquetry Tea Caddy
Antique Regency Parquetry Tea Caddy

A two-compartment tea caddy in the sarcophagus shape, with a lid of tumbling cubes in light and dark wood. I keep looking at how the cubes read as three dimensional from almost any angle. Tea was costly and kept under lock, so caddies like this lived in the drawing room, and the lady of the house usually kept the key.
The parquetry on the lid is lifting along the middle of the left side, where the veneer has begun to separate from its ground. It is visible in the photographs and will need monitoring or gluing. The surrounding cubes are in place. There is a bubble in the wood on the back panel.
The diamond-shaped escutcheon surround that would have framed the keyhole is missing, leaving an empty recess. There is no key. The lock mechanism is present and its function has not been tested.
The compartments are lined in wood veneer and each retains its lid. The underside is covered in a dark, matte material that has not been identified. The finish shows light wear and small marks consistent with age and handling.
Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
