Oysters shucked and scattered across a dark ledge, a squeezed lemon, a stout stoneware jug, and a green roemer catching the last of the light. Hubert Bellis built his reputation in Brussels on exactly this subject, the riches of the sea painted loose and wet with a confident hand. Signed H. Bellis lower right. Bellis trained at the Académie de Bruxelles under François-Joseph Navez and exhibited through the 1870s and 1880s, and his still lifes hang today in Belgian and Dutch public collections.
The painting presents well with a warm, tonal surface. Visible under close inspection are scattered light-colored specks across the surface and a few small raised accretions, most noticeable in the upper background, along with surface grime consistent with age. These are visual observations from the photographs and my in-hand look, and I recommend confirming the surface in person. The canvas is stable on its stretcher with a keyed, mortise-and-tenon construction visible from the reverse. The reverse is uniformly darkened with age. The gilt gesso frame is substantial and holds well overall, with minor rubbing and small losses to the high points of the molding consistent with age and handling
