Broad heathland in high summer, the heather gone over to pink and mauve, with a laborer pausing beside a horse and green-wheeled cart while a church spire rises faint on the horizon. The paint is worked wet and broken, flecked impasto through the flowering ground and a luminous grey sky brushed thin above it. It is signed at the lower right, and the plein-air handling and construction place it in the Continental tradition of open-air landscape painting around the turn of the century. A quietly ambitious field study, larger and more resolved than most surviving examples of its kind.

School or Movement
Plein-air naturalism. From the mid-19th century, painters across France, Belgium, and the Netherlands left the studio to work outdoors directly from the landscape, favoring natural light, everyday rural subjects, and visible, broken brushwork over the polished finish the academies preferred. The high-key color and flecked handling of the flowering heath here belong to that open-air tradition.
Support
Unlined, original canvas on a keyed wooden stretcher
Condition

The painting presents well overall, with a fresh, high-key surface and strong impasto through the flowering ground. There is visible craquelure across the sky and the lighter passages, consistent with age in an oil of this period. No paint loss is apparent on close visual inspection, though I note that as an observation to be confirmed in person rather than a guarantee. The canvas is unlined and original, on its keyed stretcher, with the tacking edges intact. The surface would benefit from a light professional clean but is stable and sound as it stands.

The frame is giltwood with a foliate outer molding and a beaded inner lip. It is not original to the painting. There is minor rubbing and a few small losses to the gilding at the corners and high points, consistent with age and handling.
