There's a warm coral sky behind this one, the kind of light that comes at the end of a fishing day, and a crew working a beached boat at the tide line. Figures in red and blue crowd the hull, an anchor lies in the wet sand, and a woman carries a load up the beach toward the viewer. It is painted on a small panel in the coastal genre tradition of Cancale, the Breton fishing town that Jacques Eugène Feyen made his subject for decades. The panel bears a signature reading Feyen at lower left. The surname is legible, though it does not match the artist's documented "Eug. Feyen" form, so it is offered in his manner rather than as a confirmed work by his hand.
The painting is on a rigid wood panel and reads as stable in the photographs, with the caveat that this is a visual assessment and not an in-hand or technical inspection. The paint surface shows scattered spots of dark accretion and light surface grime across the sky, and there are small flecks of loss and spotting visible in the upper area. Craquelure is not pronounced in the images. The signature at lower left is legible as Feyen but does not match the artist's documented signature form, which is disclosed above and in the listing.
The frame has real losses. There are open corner miters at several corners, chips to the carved gesso ornament, and areas of exposed red bole and raw gesso where the gilding has broken away, most visible at the lower corners and along the outer scroll edge. The gilding is worn overall with high points rubbed. The frame is structurally holding but shows its age plainly. It is a carved period-style giltwood frame that suits the panel, sold as is with the losses described.
The verso shows an older wood backing with a wire hanger on modern D-ring hooks, a partially legible script inscription, and a small diamond paper label with a handwritten number that cannot be fully read. These are noted for completeness and are not offered as documented provenance.

Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
