G. Barnett Smith’s life of Queen Victoria, in Routledge’s People’s Edition, bound in brown pictorial cloth with a sailing boat at sunset framed in an arch on the front board and yellow and red flowers climbing the spine. Smith was a Liberal journalist and biographer who also wrote popular lives of Gladstone and Victor Hugo, and this one was written for the general reader rather than the specialist. A frontispiece portrait shows the young Victoria. The front endpaper carries an ink inscription from the Associates of the Girls’ Friendly Society, dated February 1st, 1893, with many good wishes. The decorated binding is the draw here.

Overall good condition for its age. The pictorial cloth is intact, with the blocking on the front board and spine clear. There is rubbing to the extremities, and the foot of the spine is worn and slightly frayed. The pages show light toning consistent with age. The presentation inscription is in period ink and legible, apart from a name written above it that I cannot read confidently.
