An antique coromandel cigarette and games box with one of the better fitted interiors I have handled. The lid lifts and the front folds down to reveal tiered spring-loaded racks that hold cigarettes upright in rows, flanked by wells for chips and a base tray for cards and score pencils. The case is veneered in striped coromandel with fine boxwood stringing and sits on an ebonized plinth, and the lid carries an inlaid panel of the four card suits in contrasting wood: diamond, spade, heart, and club. It was made to sit out on a card table so a full evening of cards and smoking lived in one handsome box.
The box is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear. The coromandel veneer and boxwood stringing are intact across the exterior case, with light surface scratches and handling marks on the lid and sides consistent with age and use. The ebonized plinth base shows minor edge wear. There is some veneer chipping and small losses along the edge of one interior rack shelf, visible in the photographs. The fold-down tiered racks and trays are structurally sound and operate as intended. There are no maker's marks anywhere on the piece. The playing cards, poker chips, and pencils shown in the photographs are later additions, included with the box as a decorative assortment and not original to it. They are pictured to show how the interior was designed to be used. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
Shipping & Returns
All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.
Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
Furniture is the exception. Because of size and weight, furniture shipping is quoted separately rather than calculated at checkout. Send a DM on Instagram or email austynmariedesign@gmail.com for a quote, or arrange your own shipping from the warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
If your piece arrives damaged, please photograph the damage immediately (including packaging), contact us within 48 hours at austynmariedesign@gmail.com, and do not discard any packaging.
