This is the carved, gold decorative top that once sat on a column or post inside a building. It is half-round with a flat back, so it was made to sit against a wall. The front has a row of rounded, ribbed carving that curves across the body, a line of little carved beads along the top edge, and a crossed-ribbon design wrapping around the bottom. The gold is real gold leaf laid over the wood, and where it has worn on the raised areas you can see the warm red and white layers underneath, which is exactly what you want to see on an older gilded piece. It is solid, heavy, and has real presence as a standalone object.
This is a genuine salvaged piece with honest wear throughout. The gold finish shows rubbing and some flaking on the raised areas, and in those spots you can see the red and white layers underneath, which is normal for a piece of this age. There are small losses to the gold here and there, mostly along the top edge and the lower band. The back and underside are raw and unfinished, showing the solid wood it was built from, along with some old marks, a metal fastener, and natural cracking in the wood. There is a small age split at one edge of the back. The piece is solid and stable. It is sold as a decorative object.
Attribution note: This piece has no marks, labels, or paperwork showing exactly where or when it was made. The description of it as a European classical architectural piece from around 1900 is based on the carving, the gilding, and how it was built. Origin and date are informed estimates, not certainties.
