About This Piece

A young woman stands full length in a Gothic hall, dressed in 17th-century revival costume: a black velvet bodice with slashed sleeves and white linen undersleeves, a wide pleated collar, a lace cap, and a deep crimson skirt that trails across a checkerboard marble floor. Behind her a stained glass lancet window catches the light and a pointed arch opens to a fire lit corridor. This is a historicist costume piece, the kind of academic genre portrait that dressed a contemporary model in Renaissance finery. The canvas carries a Munich colourman's stamp reading "Richard Wurm, München" and a Brussels framer's label on the reverse.

Painters set contemporary models in Renaissance costume and architectural interiors, drawing on the prestige of the Old Masters while working in the polished, tightly finished technique taught in the European academies. The mode was popular across Germany, the Low Countries, and France from roughly 1850 to 1890.

Condition

The painting presents well overall, with a legible, richly colored surface and good contrast between the crimson skirt, the black bodice, and the pale collar and cap. Craquelure is visible across the surface throughout, consistent with age, and is most apparent in the darker passages of the background and the skirt. The canvas has been relined, which has stabilized it against further age-related movement. The relining means any labels or inscriptions once on the reverse of the original canvas are no longer accessible, though the colourman's stamp remains visible through the lining. There is some surface grime and a slightly uneven varnish typical of a work of this age. I have not identified specific areas of retouch from the photographs, and I am not making a claim either way on that point. The stretcher is keyed and sound. A pencil size notation is present on the stretcher bar.

The frame is a period giltwood moulding with an egg-and-dart outer band and a beaded inner edge. It shows rubbing to the gilt at the high points and along the outer edges, with minor losses at the corners, all consistent with age and honest wear.

All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.

Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.

Furniture is the exception. Because of size and weight, furniture shipping is quoted separately rather than calculated at checkout. Send a DM on Instagram or email austynmariedesign@gmail.com for a quote, or arrange your own shipping from the warehouse.

All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
