A Regency-period silk embroidery worked by a named English gentlewoman, with a handwritten family inscription on the verso identifying the maker as Mary Milford, born 1777, died 1831, married name partially legible, most likely Merriman. The subject is a floral nosegay of roses, tulips, anemones, and smaller blossoms tied with a ribbon bow, executed in long-and-short stitch silk thread on a silk satin ground. Pieces of this age with a documented maker inscription are genuinely uncommon at this level of the market. It is housed in an antique carved giltwood frame under thick period glass and has been conserved with a fine net overlay stitched across the surface to stabilize the original silk ground.

Condition

The embroidery is in fair condition consistent with its age of approximately 200 years. The silk thread work itself survives well in the central floral grouping, with the rose, tulips, and ribbon bow retaining good color and readable stitch detail. The long-and-short shading in the tulip petals is particularly intact. The silk satin ground has deteriorated significantly, with foxing, discoloration, and tone loss across the background, and there are areas of ground failure in the lower left quadrant and lower center where the backing fabric is exposed beneath the conservation net. A fine silk or cotton net overlay has been hand-stitched across the entire surface in a grid of running stitches to stabilize the original fabric; this conservation layer is aged and visually present, and shows some lifting at the edges of loss areas. The piece is housed under thick antique glass which is intact. The giltwood frame shows gesso losses at the lower rail and lower corners where white gesso is exposed, and the gilding is evenly patinated overall. The frame joint at the upper left shows a minor separation. The verso label is original and partially torn, with the married surname and text following the death date lost to the tear.
