Antique French walnut commode from the Empire into Restauration period, circa 1830, with its original fossil-limestone top. The columnar case is flanked by flat half-column pilasters and stands on square block feet, a restrained architectural form built for a bedroom or entry.
Solid walnut throughout the show surfaces, with a concealed frieze drawer above three long graduated drawers. Turned brass knobs and shield-form escutcheons. The gray-black stone top is a fossiliferous limestone shot through with visible shell and crinoid inclusions.
The piece carries the honest wear of two centuries of use, detailed in full below.
Sold as-is, with photos governing. This is an antique in honest, used condition, and everything visible is disclosed here.
Finish: the surface has been worked at some point and is not original. It reads as a later shellac or waxed finish, cleaned and waxed, method not established. Warm and even, with fine scratching and a few short grain checks across the drawer fronts, none structural.
Wood-boring insect: old flight holes are present on the lower rails and one drawer. The infestation is inactive and the piece has been treated; it is not actively infested. The holes are historic and stable.
Drawer front: one long drawer shows a split with old filler. Stable.
Stone top: fossiliferous limestone with genuine wear consistent with age, including surface staining, ring marks, whitish bloom, edge wear and a chip. Fossil shell and crinoid inclusions are visible throughout.
Hardware: turned brass knobs and shield-form brass escutcheons, consistent across the case and appropriate to the period. Originality not verified beyond visual consistency.
Locks: two keys present, not original to the piece. The antique locks are a little finicky to turn. One key operates the top two drawers, the other the bottom drawer.
