A pair of small French advertising glasses made for Vin Bravais, a tonic wine sold through pharmacies from the late 1800s into the early 20th century. Each ribbed glass tumbler sits inside a removable openwork silver-plated sleeve, cast and pierced in a Gothic Revival idiom with quatrefoils, fleur-de-lis cresting, foliate scrollwork, and a central oval cartouche embossed VIN BRAVAIS. The sleeves slide off for cleaning, a thoughtful detail of the original design, and both retain their cast detail crisply with the warm patina that comes from more than a century of careful use. The antique trade attributes the crystal to Baccarat, but the glasses are unmarked, so I offer them honestly as French, ca. 1900, attributed in the trade.

Condition

Both glasses present in honest used condition consistent with age. One glass has a small flake to the upper rim, approximately 2 to 3 millimeters at its widest point, visible on close inspection but not obtrusive. The glasses show very fine surface scratches throughout, typical of careful use over more than a century, and not noticeable except under direct light. The silver-plated sleeves show warm patina overall with no significant losses to plating or damage to the cast openwork. Both sleeves are structurally sound and slide cleanly on and off their respective glasses. No cracks, no missing decorative elements, no repairs.
