A French silverplate open salt cellar in the Louis XVI taste, with a deep cobalt blue glass liner and a cast metal frame of real decorative ambition for its size. The frame is built around four fluted pilasters capped with flower-head boss plaques, connected by swaged garlands of roses and a dentil band running below the rim, and lifted on four slender tapered feet with scrolled toes. All of this ornament is cast rather than chased, which is typical of Belle Époque and Edwardian-era French production, when this Louis XVI vocabulary was reproduced prolifically for middle-class dining tables. No maker's marks are present, but the style, casting quality, and cobalt liner are consistent with French production circa 1890 to 1910.

The cobalt blue glass liner is present and in good condition with light surface scratching visible on the interior floor, consistent with normal use. The liner seats securely within the frame.
