A French silver plated open salt cellar, also called a master salt, with a pierced Gothic Revival gallery and original cobalt glass liner. The gallery pattern is lifted directly from medieval cathedral window tracery, pointed arches enclosing quatrefoils with central crosses, the same architectural vocabulary A.W.N. Pugin and the wider Gothic Revival carried into nineteenth century decorative arts. The cobalt liner reads almost black on the table and deep blue when held to light. Unmarked, which is typical of French and Belgian silver plate of this period. Sourced in France.

Condition

Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The silver plating shows expected loss along the high points, primarily on the upper and lower rim edges where the copper base shows through. This is part of the patina rather than damage. The pierced gallery is intact with no breaks, splits, or repairs. All four ball feet are present and secure. The cobalt glass liner is in good condition with no chips or cracks and seats properly in the frame. Light residue from a previous sticker remains on the surface of the glass and should clean off with a gentle wash.
