There is a working harbor here at the turn of dusk, three fishing luggers under tan and ochre lugsails drawn up together while a steam tug slips past at left trailing a thin line of smoke. The paint is worked thick in the broken sky and across the water, thin and quiet in the far reach where more sails fade toward a low town. It carries no signature. What it does carry is its original unlined canvas on the stretcher it was built on, and the period gilt frame it has worn since it was made.
The canvas is unlined and remains on its original keyed stretcher, with the tacking margins still wrapping the bars and old tack holes present. The paint surface carries a discolored varnish and light grime overall, consistent with age, and shows fine, stable craquelure across the sky. Faint stretcher bar impressions are visible along the edges in raking light. There is a small scuff or minor loss in the water at lower right center. No tears, punctures, or patches are present, and the reverse is bare with no labels or stamps. The original gilt frame is water gilded over red bole and shows losses and abrasion at all four corners with gesso and bole exposed, old white infill repairs, and chips along the outer edges. The beaded inner slip is largely intact. Condition observations from examination in hand; a buyer should assume the varnish is aged and the frame wear is honest and visible.
