A beautifully compact antique French Catholic prayer book titled Recueil de Prières, created for students in Christian schools and designed to be carried and used daily. This miniature devotional is full of old-world charm, featuring a working metal clasp, protective metal edge mounts, and rich gilt page edges that give it that unmistakable 19th century “jewel book” look. Inside, you will find crisp French devotional text with engraved religious illustrations and handsome geometric patterned endpapers that instantly read as period decorative paper. The title page notes the Limoges imprint Ancienne Maison Barbou Frères, Ch. Barbou, éditeur, a respected French religious publisher, and while no year is printed on the visible title page, the style and imprint point to a mid-19th century production, circa 1840s to 1860s. Condition:  Covers show rubbing, scuffing, and edge and corner wear consistent with a carried pocket book. Metal clasp and fittings show age patina and surface tarnish, and the clasp appears present and functional. Gilt page edges remain visible with expected wear and mellowing. Interior shows toning, light spotting, and visible staining or tide marks on some early leaves, with overall text block intact and readable. Endpapers display age toning and wear at hinges, consistent with use and age.
