This is a French Louis XVI transitional commode, its case worked entirely in geometric parquetry with a shaped white marble top. The lower drawers carry a cube-and-lozenge trellis, the frieze a run of broken-baton banding, all framed in contrasting stringing and dressed with cast gilt-brass mounts, ring pulls, and figural corner chutes. It stands on tapered, fluted legs capped in brass. A refined, formal piece that reads beautifully against both dark and pale walls, and works as a bedroom chest, an entry statement, or a living-room storage piece under art.
Sold as-is, with photos governing. This is an antique and shows honest age throughout.
The surface is a French-polished veneer that has been cleaned and waxed; it is not the original untouched finish, and there is light wear, minor lifting, and small losses to the veneer and stringing consistent with age, most visible at drawer edges and corners. Examine the detail photos closely.
The marble top is original to the case, its shape conforming to the base. It has a chip and associated loss at one front corner, shown in the photos, along with light surface staining and natural veining that should not be mistaken for cracks.
The gilt-brass mounts are intact with expected wear and darkening to the gilding. The drawers are hand-dovetailed with solid pine bottoms and retain heavy interior oxidation, dust, old workshop pencil and compass marks, and minor shrinkage typical of the period. The framed plank back is oxidized with old nail holes, shrinkage gaps, and a shrinkage split, all structural and stable. Legs and brass sabots are sound.
Locks are present; one working key with a tassel is included. Not all locks have been tested. Species is assessed from the veneer as kingwood and tulipwood but cannot be confirmed without sampling, so it is offered as an assessment rather than a certainty. Dimensions are approximate. No active woodworm was observed, but the piece has not been formally treated or tested for it.
