Antique French Oak Jardiniere on Stand
Antique French Oak Jardiniere on Stand
Couldn't load pickup availability
A French oak jardinière raised on a fluted-leg stand, made around the turn of the last century in the Henri II taste. The rectangular trough holds its original zinc liner, and the case is dressed with molded panels and carved shell-and-foliate sprays across the front. It reads beautifully as an entry or window piece, planted or left as sculpture.
Sold as-is, with photos governing. This is an antique piece and shows honest age throughout.
Wood: The case, legs, and stretcher are structurally sound and stand solidly. The finish is a later shellac-type surface rather than an original patina; it is warm and even with scattered scratches, nicks, and handling marks consistent with age, most visible along the top edge and back. The single-board back shows shrinkage and old surface wear. Small losses and roughness are visible at the molded top edge and corners.
Old insect flight holes are present along the top back rail and around the liner rim. These are historic and inactive, with no fresh frass and no signs of ongoing activity. As with any antique, the piece has not been chemically treated; the holes are disclosed specifically because they are numerous along the rear rail and visible on close inspection.
Liner: The original zinc liner is intact and removable but heavily oxidized, with verdigris, mineral crusting, old solder seams, and small perforations. It is not watertight. Use a separate waterproof insert or cachepots for live plants.
Dimensions are approximate. No maker's mark, stamp, or label is present; the date is a construction-based estimate. Species stated as an assessment from grain structure, not a proven identification.
