French Louis XVI-Revival Semainier (Lingerie Chest), c. 1880 – Walnut, Chevron Veneer & Rouge Marble
52” H x 23.5” W x 15” D
This tall, narrow semainier, dating from around 1880–1890, captures the timeless charm of Louis XVI revival style with its elegant Parisian roots. Made from rich walnut arranged in a striking chevron pattern and accented with mahogany trim, it features seven slim drawers, each intended to hold a day’s worth of delicate items like linens, gloves, or scarves. The top is crowned with a thick slab of polychrome marble, showcasing warm tones of honey-yellow, rose-pink, and charcoal, softly beveled for a refined finish. Original turned-ring brass pulls and neoclassical escutcheons add a warm, authentic touch. Supported by gently curved cabriole legs with subtle sabots, this piece fits beautifully in a hallway, dressing room, or bedroom nook, combining practical vertical storage with classic French elegance.
Condition: All seven drawers operate smoothly on their original wooden runners, ensuring reliable daily use. The walnut and mahogany veneers remain tight, showing only minor age-related wear such as small edge chips and a subtle veneer repair on the lower right drawer that blends seamlessly with the chevron pattern. The marble top has light surface scratches and two small chips along the rear bevel, as shown in the photos. Inside, the hand-dovetailed oak linings feature a warm dry-oil patina. While most drawers keep their original turned-ring pulls and escutcheons, a few have period-appropriate replacement pulls with slight variations in design and finish. The back panels are untouched aged pine with original shop markings, highlighting the piece’s genuine 19th-century craftsmanship.
