A petite French giltwood footstool in the Louis XVI revival manner, made in the last quarter of the 19th century. The carved oak frame stands on four square tapered legs, each capped with an acanthus crocket and joined to the apron through square corner dies carved with single flower heads, a defining motif of the Louis XVI vocabulary. The apron carries foliate scrolls in raised relief over a lattice ground. The original gold leaf gilding has worn evenly across the high points to expose the red bole beneath, the kind of patina that only comes from time. The removable cushion is finished in corded silk velvet of deep red with brass dome-head nail trim.
The footstool is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear throughout. The carved giltwood frame is structurally sound. The original gilding survives across the entire piece with even rubbing on the high points and chips to the gesso at the feet and corners, exposing the red bole and white gesso ground in places. This wear is consistent with original gilding of this age and has not been refreshed or regilded. The carved details, including the floral corner dies, acanthus capitals, lattice ground, and foliate apron, are all intact with no losses to the carving. The original red corded silk velvet cushion shows significant fading, pile loss, and surface staining across the top, with some areas worn through to the base weave. The brass dome-head nail trim is fully present and tight to the frame. The cushion is removable and sits within the giltwood frame on a webbed base. Old paper inventory labels remain on the underside.
