Antique French floral still life, oil on canvas, signed lower left with a signature reading "Ch. Niox," artist unidentified. A tall bouquet of poppies, daisies, cornflowers, sweet William, and Queen Anne's lace stands in a grey salt glazed jug with cobalt banding, next to a wicker basket spilling wild strawberries onto the ledge. The wheat and field grasses worked through the arrangement place it in the naturalist end of the French Salon flower tradition, less formal parlor piece, more country table. The reverse carries a Raphael Paris colourman stamp on the stretcher.

Condition

The painting presents well overall with a bright, readable surface. There is a small area of paint loss in the upper left background, visible as a light spot against the grey ground. Scattered fine craquelure is consistent with age. The canvas has been relined and sits on a keyed wooden stretcher with the tacking edges intact. Because the work is relined, any labels or inscriptions once on the original reverse are no longer accessible, and the visible verso evidence is the lining canvas, a keyed stretcher, and the Raphael colourman stamp. A partial stamp is present on the canvas but is not legible. A painted inventory number reads 38/37 on the top stretcher bar.

The gilt frame shows wear and gilt loss at the corners and along the ribbed molding, with red bole showing through at the high points. Frame condition is honest for the age. I have not verified whether the frame is original to the painting.
