In a turquoise vase set on a plain ledge, a loose gathering of cream and blush roses and peonies leans into the light against a deep olive ground. The handling is confident and quick in the blooms, tighter and darker in the background, the way academic floral painters worked to push the flowers forward. Two petals have fallen to the ledge, the small note of transience that runs through this genre. Unsigned in any legible way and unidentified, which is usual for decorative floral studies of this period, many painted for the trade rather than for exhibition. It comes to me on its original unlined canvas and keyed stretcher, honest and unrestored on the front.
Oil on canvas, unframed, on its original unlined canvas and original keyed wooden stretcher. The painted surface is stable. There is age craquelure throughout, most visible across the pale blooms and the olive ground, consistent with an oil film of this age. The front shows scattered small losses and rubbing: white ground visible along the left edge, a rubbed area with minor loss at the lower left near the base of the vase, and general wear along all four edges. There is a small later dab of light paint at the lower left that appears to be an old touch-in.
The canvas carries two fabric patches on the reverse, one horizontal at center and one vertical at the lower right. Examined in hand, the front is clean and stable at both points with nothing showing through, so the patches read as old reinforcement rather than active damage.
The tacking edges are intact but frayed, and the canvas is lifting slightly from the stretcher along the top edge. Wire hanging hardware has been added to the reverse and is later than the painting. There are faint pencil inscriptions on the upper right stretcher member, not legible, likely an old stock or inventory mark. The work is sold unframed.
