An oval ebonized plinth with a stepped, molded edge, the kind of low platform made to carry something worth raising up, a clock, a garniture, a pair of vases, a lamp. It sits on small turned bun feet and wears its age openly, the black surface rubbed back to a warm red ground along the raised border. At just over 16 inches long it gives you real room to build a vignette. I like it under a tall vase or a bell jar, doing the quiet work of making one object look intentional.

Condition

This piece has honest age and I want to lay all of it out. The ebonized surface is worn throughout, most along the raised molded border and the edges, where the warm red-brown ground underneath shows through. Across the flat top there are scattered scuffs and light surface scratches. To my eye all of this reads as genuine age and use rather than damage, and it is what gives the piece its character. There are small losses to the finish at the edges. The underside is dry and lightly soiled, as you would expect from the age, and carries an old cursive pencil inscription that I cannot fully read. It looks like an old inventory or ownership notation rather than a maker, so I am not attributing it to anyone. The piece sits flat and stable on its bun feet with no rock, and the feet are solid. No sign of active woodworm. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
